Mariposa is a pair of Inter-War flat buildings at 246-248 Campbell Parade, facing Bondi Beach, built in two stages in 1934 and 1938. Trescon kept both Art Deco street facades, replaced everything behind them with a new structure, and fitted it out as eleven apartments.

Key Features:

  • Two heritage-listed Art Deco facades (1934 and 1938) retained and restored
  • Steel needles through the existing masonry, carried on temporary piles and braced back to internal scaffold
  • A new structure and eleven apartments behind the retained frontage
  • Burra Charter conservation with lime render, salvaged brick and restored Western Red Cedar windows
  • Parapets rebuilt from Waverley Council's 1934 archive drawings
  • Interiors by Handelsmann + Khaw, and by Ennen & Co for the Unit 11 penthouse
  • Book-matched marble splashbacks in the kitchens
  • Campbell Parade footpath, planters and entries reinstated

The facades had to stay up while the building behind them came down. Partridge engineered the temporary works: steel needles through the existing masonry, carried on temporary piles and braced back to internal scaffold. With the facades held in place, Trescon demolished the old building and built the new structure. Once the new structure could carry the facades, the temporary works came out.

John Oultram Heritage & Design guided the conservation. Trescon repaired the render and masonry, rebuilt the parapets from Waverley Council's 1934 drawings and restored the Western Red Cedar windows.

Luigi Rosselli Architects designed the apartments, with interiors by Handelsmann + Khaw. Ennen & Co designed the interiors of Unit 11, the penthouse. No two kitchens share a layout, and the stone for each was templated on site against joinery that was already in place.
