Trescon delivered a major refurbishment and extension of Hornsby RSL, transforming key public areas into a modern, welcoming environment while enhancing the club’s hospitality offering. The works combined a complete upgrade of the ground-floor foyer and gaming spaces with the construction of a new first-floor alfresco gaming terrace.

The ground floor received a comprehensive reconfiguration. The existing Palms Café was removed to expand the gaming floor, and the Brew Bar was enlarged by integrating adjacent café space. The main entry foyer was opened up with the removal of outdated features, the relocation of reception, and the installation of a new entry airlock to improve comfort and energy efficiency. High-quality finishes, custom joinery, and contemporary lighting created a cohesive, upscale feel throughout the foyer, colonnade, and hospitality areas.

On Level 1, a suspended concrete mezzanine of approximately 185 m² was constructed over the former café and walkway to create a new outdoor gaming terrace. Featuring an operable louvred roof and large sliding glass doors, the space provides all-weather comfort while meeting regulations for open-air smoking areas. The extension seamlessly connects to the existing indoor gaming floor and includes direct access from the car park via new glazed entrances and awnings.

Key features:

  • Alfresco gaming terrace with operable louvered roof and rain sensors for year-round use
  • Expanded Brew Bar offering improved capacity and an open, social atmosphere
  • Custom joinery and stone finishes to elevate the venue's aesthetics and durability
  • Energy-efficient lighting and glazing in line with the Section J compliance

Working within a live hospitality venue required careful planning to minimise disruption. Construction zones were fully hoarded from public areas, with high-impact works scheduled during off-peak hours. The new mezzanine required complex structural integration with the existing building, managed through temporary propping, staged demolition, and close coordination with structural engineers.

Design and compliance requirements for the outdoor gaming area were addressed through innovative solutions, ensuring sufficient open wall area for natural ventilation while maintaining patron comfort.

The Hornsby RSL upgrade delivers a blend of functionality, comfort, and contemporary design. The reimagined ground-floor spaces improve flow and hospitality offerings, while the new alfresco gaming terrace adds a distinctive feature that enhances the club’s appeal. The project showcases Trescon’s expertise in complex refurbishments, structural modifications, and delivering high-quality finishes in operational environments.
